Friends, the response to The Rescue Project has been overwhelming! That has its blessings and burdens.
The Blessing? More than 180 people have registered so far. There were several walk-ins last Tuesday. There is still room for more!
The Burden? First we had to move from Vincentian Hall to the Gym because it got too big and that means a lot more set-up and some cooperation and compromise with the School.
Then, feeding this many people?! It is right up there with the Loaves and Fishes. We quickly set aside the potluck idea as being too cumbersome, so we are switching gears and are in contact with local caterers and restaurants to serve a hot meal to a big crowd and to do so expeditiously. And we are determined to keep it free for those participating.
The caterer this week is going to plate the food and have it served at table, not a buffet. I need 10 volunteers to step forward to come to the Queens School Gym at 5:15pm this Tuesday the 26th to help serve the meal to your fellow parishioners. You would get a free meal out of the deal! And a good one at that!
I am specifically looking for people who are NOT attending The Rescue Project to help with this!
Short notice? You bet. Why? We found out about this need last week and tried with different avenues to get groups to volunteer but those efforts did not pan out with the results needed in a timely fashion, and the clock just keeps on ticking.
Why not get the people in the room to serve their own food? Good question. The table talk during dinner is an important component of The Rescue Project and we do not want to take away from that for those who signed up.
This same caterer is doing the meal for October 3rd and 10th. The same need will arise then also, but those dates perhaps buy us more time to find other options.
This would make a great service hour opportunity for those in our Confirmation program or if students have service hour requirements for Lumen Christi or their public school.
