“In Communion” Print E-mail

We have heard this expression in church circles. It is used as a part of the explanation behind our posture at communion, but let’s not go there today. We are “in communion” with Benedict XVI, the Vicar of Christ and Bishop of Rome. Each year we show our solidarity with the Holy Father through the annual “Peter’s Pence” collection scheduled for the weekend of August 10 and 11 in our diocese.

The funds gathered from around the world through this annual appeal go to assist Pope Benedict in offering financial assistance to the poor, the marginalized, and those affected by war, oppression, famine or natural catastrophes. As a parish we continue to be conscious of, and generous toward, the needs of others. Please open your hearts once again to this year’s “Peter’s Pence” collection.
Simply use the envelope provided in your packet. If using a check, be sure to write “Peter’s Pence” in the memo portion.
“All Good Things Must Come to an End”
Well, the truth is that the really good things—heaven, eternal life, relationships, people—don’t come to an end. Thank God! In the next few days we will see Fr. Nate head off into the sunset (actually the sunrise—he’s going east to Ottawa) and Anthony heading off to the seminary (really a return engagement of sorts for two more years of study).
Funny how God works! Fr. Nate and I are from the same small town near Flint (he arrived there after high school; I arrived there at birth). I have known Anthony’s grandparents since before Anthony was not much taller than a grasshopper. Here in Jackson our paths have crossed, and my life is but one of many that have been blessed by the presence of these two fine young men (Yes, Fr. Nate, 31 is still young in my book of ages).
Our congregation has made a lasting impression on them and they both hope to stay connected with us over the next couple of years ‘til they both “finish school.” Then we will see where God’s sense of humor (and the bishop’s) leads them next. Please stop by the Social Center this Sunday afternoon between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. to offer a word of thanks to both of them for their presence and ministry among us.

—Fr Bob
