MISSION APPEAL WEEKEND AT QUEENS

On the 40th day after the Resurrection, as Jesus ascended into Heaven, he instructed his apostles to go out to the whole world and make disciples of all the nations.  That is the missionary impulse that has spread the Gospel to the far corners of the earth for nearly 2,000 years.

It was missionaries from Europe who first preached the Gospel in Asia and Africa, in places like Kumbakonam in southern India.  Now, missionaries come from these places to Europe and America where priests are few.  Our Lady of Fatima, St. Rita, and St. Peter up in Eaton Rapids, all of these are local examples of parishes now pastored by priests from India.  A priest from Africa is pastor in Flint.

Now it is our turn to support the missions and places where the church’s financial resources are slim and cannot keep pace with the growth of the Catholic population.  The Diocese of Kumbakonam is one such place.  This weekend we welcome their recently retired Bishop Emeritus Antonysamy Francis.  He will preach about the needs of his diocese and he will ask for our help.

The American dollar doesn’t stretch very far in America these days, but once it is exchanged into Indian rupees, great things can happen, things that will reshape the lives of those we help, creating hope and light where there was only despair and darkness before.  Most of us will never go on a mission trip.   Many may never visit a foreign country, but participating in these annual mission appeals year after year allow us to play a role in the spread of Jesus’ Gospel love all over the world.

Bishop Francis will not be asking for a second collection.  Plan ahead and prepare your gift before you come to Mass this weekend.  There will also be envelopes in the pews for this purpose that can be placed in the regular parish offertory.  All checks can be made payable to Queens with ‘mission appeal’ written clearly on the memo line or the front of the envelope.

PARISH PICNIC
NEXT SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND

The Parish Life Commission and the Knights of Columbus invite you to the Annual Parish Picnic in Vincentian Hall after the 11am Mass next Sunday September 22nd.  The KofC will be grilling hotdogs and hamburgers and there will be baked beans, cole slaw and chocolate chip cookies.  There will be a bounce house and childrens games outside.  It’s all free and it is all fun!  Plan on being there.

THE RCIA / OCIA
NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN

The Bishops have changed the name from RCIA to OCIA:  The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.  This is intended for the unbaptized, Christians of other denominations who may wish to become Catholic, or those who were baptized Catholic but never received the other sacraments of initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation).

The OCIA meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:15pm in the lower level of the parish office.  If you know someone – invite them and come with them!  This could be a spouse, family member, relative, friend, coworker, neighbor, etc.  Contact the office if interested or just show up!

Have you ever invited someone to become Catholic?  Has someone ever challenged you to stop being Catholic?  It seems that one is happening much more often than the other.  We need to be proud of our faith and yet practice it with humility.

Now that the Bishop’s Road to Emmaus is complete, the next initiative is entitled Be My Witnesses.  Our chief shepherd will challenge us each week to do simple things that might have a profound impact on our faith and someone else’s.  Inviting someone to consider becoming Catholic is the first step.

OFFERINGS FOR THE LADIES

Make sure you pick up a copy of this weekend’s bulletin or read it online to get the latest information on the S3 Capital Campaign for Catholic education.  Our committee of volunteers has been recruited and is currently being trained to assist me in raising funds to keep Catholic schools affordable, accessible and ‘on mission’ in the Diocese of Lansing.

Queen is in Wave 1 of this three wave campaign.  Our kick off weekend is planned for October 5-6.  I spent a good portion of the summer using the bulletin to inform you of the background of this campaign and the case for support.  We will soon start ramping up communications again as we get ready to launch.

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Lord, everything we have is a gift from you.
You call us to receive your gifts with thanks,
to develop these gifts fully,
and to share them generously.
Through the Stewardship for Saints and Scholars campaign
help every young person in the Diocese of Lansing
see your truth, beauty, and goodness;
help families to raise their children in the Faith;
and help parishes make a truly Catholic education
available to all.
May the work of this campaign bear abundant fruit
in the Saints and Scholars you are raising up for the future.
We ask these blessings through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us

Truth, beauty and goodness are found in God, in His mercy, and in the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church founded by His son.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching” (Heb 13:8-9).
